Who I Am

I grew up in Shoreline, Washington before it was incorporated. In fact, it was so small that you had to dial "9" to get an outside line, and there were no stoplights on Highway 99! The grade school I went to is now a museum. I graduated from Shoreline High School; got my Bachelor of Arts from Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington; and got my Master of Science in Psychology from Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington. I am married, and my wife and I live with her two children. I have two grown sons.

My Special Interests

I have a long-standing interest in results-oriented therapies, such as Strategic Therapy, Systemic Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy, and hypnotherapy, and I have trained with the Gottman Institute™. I have completed their Level Three training, and I am part of their referral network. Having completed the certification program for hypnotherapy at the Wellness Institute, I am now a Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist.  I systematically apply what I have learned using the Transtheoretical Model of personal change and growth.

What these all have in common is direct intervention to free the individual, couple, or family from the maladaptive patterns of behavior that are preventing them from solving their problems effectively, addressing those issues, adapting creatively, and being able to move on as stronger and happier people. This is especially helpful for people in crisis or people who are trying to adapt or respond to dilemmas or problems that seem otherwise unsolvable.

Teaching & Workshops

I teach a variety of workshops for the general public on the following topics related to books and workbooks I have written or am writing:
